Etched in the heart and vessels of the Jamaican Youth Empowerment through Culture Arts and
Nationalism (JAYECAN), is the spirit of volunteerism, community development and nation
Adrian Watson, a 28 year old, youth leader and advocate, is seemingly driven by this same spirit.
Adrian, who has a background in natural resource management, earned his Bachelors of Science
degree in Geography and Zoology from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
His innate talent for leader and a motivator, has earned him many opportunities, to include:
National Coordinator for the Caribbean Youth Environment Network Jamaica as well as being
the Latin America and the Caribbean Representative on the Steering Committee of the Global
Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) and also served on the Projects, Events and Competition
committee for the Commonwealth Youth Climate Network (CYCN). He has also served as a
team leader for the GYBN delegation to the United Nations’ 13th Conference of the Parties on
Biodiversity; covering topics such as pollination, synthetic biology, and wildlife management
especially in relation to livelihood preservation.
Adrian has also gone on to serve has a Climate Change Facilitator under the Jamaica Rural
Economy and Ecosystems Adapting to Climate Change (JaREEACH) Project; where is has
taught the science of Climate Change and project proposal writing to over 60 persons of which
two groups were awarded projects namely the Old Harbour Youth Coalition and the Knox
Community College Environmental Science Cohort.
Watson is also very passionate about youths and has strived to fuel the interest of young people
and increase environmental awareness, conservation and sustainable environmental use among
Jamaicans and the wider Caribbean citizens. In his effort to connect with the youths, Adrian has
served as an advisor to the Seaview Gardens Youth Council and Block Coordinator for the
Seaview Gardens’ Community Development Committee.
Adrian is a proud advocate and motivator; especially in the areas of the environment, sustainable
development and youth inclusion. JAYECAN was honoured to present to him the 2016 Youth
Empowerment Award for Outstanding Leadership in a Climate Change Initiative.
